How Relay uses your Gmail data
Relay connects to your Gmail account via Google's OAuth 2.0 protocol. Here's exactly what we access and why.
What we access
- Email message content — subject lines, body text, and headers so Relay can classify conversations and generate draft replies.
- Email metadata — sender, recipients, timestamps, and thread IDs to keep your inbox in sync.
- Your email address — to identify the connected mailbox.
What we do NOT do
- We do not sell, share, or transfer your email data to third parties for advertising or data-brokering purposes.
- We do not use your email content to train public machine-learning models.
- We do not store your Google password. Authentication is handled entirely through Google's OAuth flow, and we only store encrypted access and refresh tokens.
- We do not send emails from your account unless you explicitly grant sending permission (a separate OAuth step).
Data storage
We store only the data required to provide the service — message content needed for classification and draft generation, thread metadata for sync, and encrypted OAuth tokens. Data is stored in a secured, access-controlled database. All tokens are encrypted at rest.
Revoking access
You can revoke Relay's access to your Gmail at any time:
- Go to Google Account → Security → Third-party access
- Find “Relay” in the list of connected apps
- Click “Remove Access”
You can also disconnect your mailbox from within Relay under Settings → Mailboxes.
